ਹੇ ਸੁਹਾਗਵਤੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ! (ਹੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸਿੱਖੋ!) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਸਨੇਹਾ ਦਿਹੋ, ਦੱਸੋ। ਮੈਂ (ਉਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੀ ਬਾਬਤ) ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ (ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹਾਂ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ। ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲੱਛਣ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ। ਹੇ ਸੁਗਾਗਣੋ! ਤੁਸੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੀ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝਾਓ।੧। ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਹੇ ਲੋਕੋ! ਸੁਣੋ। ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਲੇਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਉਤੇ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ)।੨।੧।੨।

हे सुहागवती सखियो! (हे गुर-सिखों!) मुझे प्यारे प्रभु की मीठी खबर दो । मैं (उस प्यारे के बारे में) कई प्रकार (की बातें) सुन सुन के हैरान हो रही हूँ। १। रहाउ। कोई कहता है, वेह सब से बाहर बस्ता है, कोई कहता है, वेह सब के अन्दर बस्ता है। उस का रंग बही दीखता, उस का कोई लक्षण नजर नहीं आता। हे सुहागनों! तुम मुझे सच्ची बात समझाओ।१। नानक कहता है=हे लोगो! सुनो। वः परमात्मा सब मैं निवास रखने वाला है, हेरेक सरीर में बसने वाला है (फिर बाई, उस को माया का) जरा भी लेप नहीं है। वेह प्रभु संत जानो की जीभ (जिव्हा) पर बस्ता है (संत जन सर समय उसी का नाम जपते हैं।२।१।२।

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿੰਗ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ, ਤੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਮੋਹ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਆਪ ਕੱਢ ਲਿਆ, ਜੋ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਰਗੇ ਜਗਤ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ-) ਜਾਲ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ) ਚੀੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥ (ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਜੇਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਤੇ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਐਬ-ਦੀਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ॥੨॥ (ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਗ਼ਮ ਤੇ ਰੋਗ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਭਾਰੀਆਂ ਮੁਸੀਬਤਾਂ-ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ ॥੩॥ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੜ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਫੜ ਲਏ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਪਿਆ ॥੪॥੨੨॥੨੮॥

प्रभु ने अपने सेवकों के अनेकों विघन दूर कर दिए, और कृपा कर के उस को अपना बना लिया है॥१॥ हे प्रभु! तूं अपने सेवकों को (उस मोह जाल में से) आप निकल लिया, जो स्वपन जैसे जगत (का मोह) जाल (तेरे सेवक के चारो तरफ) बन गया था॥१॥रहाउ॥ (सरन आये मनुख के ) पहाड़ों जितने बड़े और भयानक कर्म-बुराइयाँ दीनो ऊपर दया करने वाले परमात्मा ने एक पल में दूर कर दिए॥२॥ (सेवकों के) अनेकों गम रोग, बड़ी भरी मुसीबतें-परमात्मा का नाम जप कर दूर हो गयी॥३॥ परमात्मा ने मेहर की नज़र कर के उस मनुख को अपने लड़ लगा लिया, हे नानक! जिस ने परमात्मा के चरण पकड़ लिए, जो मनुख प्रभु की सरन आ पड़ा॥४॥२२॥२८॥

ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬੜੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪੁੱਛਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ। ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਅਕਲ ਸਿੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

हे हरी! मेरे मन में बड़ी तीव्र इच्छा है की मैं किसी तरह, तेरा दर्शन कर सकूँ। मैं अपने गुरु के पास जा के गुरु से पूछती हूँ और गुरु से पूछ के अपने मुर्ख मन को शिक्षा देती रहती हूँ। कुराहे पड़ा हुआ मेरा मन गुरु के शब्द में जुड़ कर ही अकल सीखता है और फिर वह सदा परमात्मा का नाम याद करता रहता है। हे नानक! जिस मनुख ऊपर मेरा प्यारा प्रभु कृपा की नज़र करता है, वह प्रभु के चरणों में अपना मन जोड़ी रखता है॥१॥

ਹੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ! ਮਿੱਤਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਸਦਕੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੧। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਿੱਖ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਿਲ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਿਲ।ਰਹਾਉ। ਹੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ (ਗਾਉਣੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਣ (ਗਾਉਣੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਿੱਖੇ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ (ਮਿੱਠਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਮੰਨਿਆ ਹੈ।੨।

हे गुरसिख! मित्र गुरु ने (मुझे) परमात्मा की सिफत सलाह की बातें सुनाई हैं। मैं अपने गुरु से बार बार सदके कुर्बान जाता हूँ।१। हे मेरे गुरु के प्यारे सिख! मुझे आ के मिल, मुझे आ के मिल ।रहाउ। हे गुरसिख! परमात्मा के गुण (गाने) परमात्मा को पसंद आते हैं। मेने वेह गुण गाने, गुरु से सीखे हैं। मैं उन बड़े भाग्य वालो से बार बार कुर्बान जाता हूँ, जिन्होंने गुरु के हुकम को मीठा कर के माना है।२।

Various Sikh groups around the UK are organizing daily events to feed the homeless on the streets of UK. Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen, Midland’s Langar Seva Society, and Sikh Awareness and Welfare Team are leadingthe charge on spreading Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s message.

The principle of langar is the right to food for every human no matter which race, color, or religion. The langar is a food system run on simply compassion and is a symbol of equality as it’s eaten on the same level floor.

The feeding the homeless initiatives are purely backed by donations from the volunteers and other generous people. Many of the homeless get very happy to see the Sikhs because they know that at least that night they won’t go to sleep hungry.

UK is the first country in the world where Sikhs have taken the concept of langar outside the walls of Gurdwara and into practice just the way Guru Nanak Dev Ji had done. Guru Ji fed the poor and those who didn’t have the means to feed themselves, but in most Gurdwaras often the well fed are feeding themselves.

The Sikhs are doing amazing Seva on freezing cold nights and providing food for the less fortunate. The media around the United Kingdom has started to pick up the story the aim of these groups is to spread to other cities and one day feed every single homeless person on the street.

There is also an amazing journey of a Singh named Randhir Singh who was inspired by Khalsa Aid’s work and got involved with Seva. He stared off by feeding a small amount of people on the streets of the Midlands in UK and now has teams in cities all over the UK feeding the homeless.

Today is Valentines Day which for many is a time when people show their partner how much they love them, and will show it with a card, flowers, chocolates, emails, texts, etc. All restaurants will be booked for those romantic candle-lit “table for two” situations in the evenings, many will be going out with their partner to the cinema to watch a romantic film and whatever else these people want to do to show their partner how much they love them. For some people they will also show their parents, relatives, close friends, etc. of how much they love them and care for them by giving them a card and gift today as well.
Valentines Day has been commercialized into a day where you have to show your loved one how much you love them and show them that you love them, on this particular day than any other day.
Now for Sikhs, Valentines Day means nothing just as Christmas, Easter, St. Particks Day has no signifance for Sikhs. However, the message of Valentines Day is about Love and that has a very high significance to Sikhs!

Now for those of you who may not have known, February 10th was marked as the Shaheedee Purb of Dhan Dhan Baba Deep Singh Jee Shaheed. His Shaheedee gives Sikhs the message of Love that we need to aspire to.

Now the Shaheedee of Baba Deep Singh Jee is the shining and living example of the words of this tuk. There is no other record in the history of a man who was able to walk with his head in his hand. And by what power was Baba Deep Singh Jee able to do this.

What was the force behind this man, which enabled him to be able to achieve this act. Simple… it was Love! Love for Guru Sahib, Love for Akal Purakh, Love for Martyrdom (Shaheedee), Love for his Bachan, Love for the Sanctity of Harmandir Sahib! This Love is what drove him to stand up after being beheaded in battle and to walk a few kilometres with his severed head held high in his hand, and then to finally lay it down at the parkarma of Harminder Sahib, just as he promised Guru Jee he would. Now is there no Love greater than that which has been shown by Baba Deep Singh Jee! But the meaning of this tuk isn’t just to be able to walk with your head on your palm to show your Love to Guru Jee. The essence of the tuk and to what it is saying is simply: If you want to show your Love for Me (Vaheguru) then come onto My Path and be ready to lay down your head for Me! Again, the living and shining examples of the meaning of this tuk are etched everywhere in our history. Countless unnamed Sikhs of our history have had to lay down their heads to be able to stay on this Path, and have done so without hesitation. This shows how True there Love really is for Guru Sahib.

Vaisakhi 1699 

One of the greatest examples is that of Vaisakhi 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh Jee made the call for the head of a Sikh without any question. Again, those that had the above tuk from Guru Nanak Dev Jee etched into their hearts and souls stood up and without hesitation and surrendered their heads to Guru Sahib, only to be brought back to life to become the Five Beloved Ones (Panj Pyaarey) of Guru Gobind Singh Jee.

Further examples of this Untold Love was shown and illustrated by those Sikhs that were hunted, beheaded and had their heads stuck on poles to be paraded around by the Mughuls in front of Auranzeb. For some it is a gruesome and hideous sight to see the heads of these beautiful Sikhs being put on poles.

Honor and Love of Sikhi Maintained

The painting of this particular event brings sadness to many Sikhs. But to me, it has become a sight Of beauty, a sight of honor. This painting now shows to me the True Love these Sikhs had for Guru Sahib. These Sikhs weren’t sad or hurt at having to be beheaded, they were glad to give their heads, this is what they had done anyway when they took Amrit, and now they had the chance to finally physically give their heads for Guru Sahib. This painting shouldn’t be seen as a gruesome sight of history, Sikhs should marvel and adore it as an expression of Love for a Sikh and His Guru.
This painting, and all those many other paintings of Sikh men, women, and children laying down their lives for Guru Sahib, should be seen as expressions of Love, not of anguish, pain, and suffering. If you were to see the faces of these Shaheeds you will see none of them in pain, crying or moaning, they faces are glowing just as one does when the bride, having being separated for so long, finally meets and joins their Beloved Husband.

Being a Soul Bride

These are the Soul Brides who have now courted marriage with their Beloved Husband Lord (Vaheguru) and have merged into one with Him.This is what the cost of True Love is. There is no other greater cost than to surrender your head and your life. This is the cost of walking on this Path. This is the cost of walking towards Guru Sahib. This is the cost of walking on the Path of Truth and Righteousness. This is the cost of playing the Game of Love. This is the cost of True Love. Can there be any other greater Love to pay this cost for?

In this world, there are many kinds of Love: temporary Love, selfish Love, conditional Love, unrequitable Love, obsessive Love, passive Love, aggressive Love, etc. etc. But what is this Love that these Shaheeds expressed? What is this Love that costs you your head? Simple…

Unconditional Love! But not a Love that the western world would like us to perceive and believe. It is a Love that goes beyond all human imagination, beyond the Cosmos, beyond the Nether worlds. An Unspeakable and Undescribable Love that no poet or romance novelist could write about. A Love that not even Shakesphere could ever write or describe.

Universal Love

A Universal Love, which isn’t Love for oneself, for your partner, family, friends, humanity, but a Love for ALL! For every single living existing thing imaginable! Wherever His Creation resides, Love for that Creation abides, for each Creation is all but just a little part of the Creator (Karta Purakh)! A Love that overflows the capacity of our human body and flows like rivers of nectar through the nine gates of the body until it then flows through the Tenth gate, by which Union with our Husband Lord is inevitable! This Love can only be found and taught by Guru Sahib through His Bani!

Love Beyond Cosmos

There is no other scripture in the Universe, which talks about Love at such a level beyond the Cosmos. Guru Granth Sahib Jee is the Ultimate Love Story. An Infinite Dialogue between a Soul Bride and her longing and yearnings to meet her Beloved Husband Lord and attain Union with Him.

Now this is not common knowledge but at the same time period when Guru Arjan Dev Jee was compiling Aad Granth Sahib Jee, Shakesphere was writing Romeo and Juliet. Now you tell me, which is the greatest piece of writing on Love known to Mankind today???? If you were to go on to sikhitothemax.com (Gurbani Search Engine) and do a search for the word “Love”, you will be amazed and shocked to see the countless and innumerable Gurbani tuks relating to the word ‘Love’ from our Beloved Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee.
Let us commemorate this Valentines Day by showing our Love for Guru Sahib.

Let us contemplate the sacrifices of Shaheeds like Baba Deep Singh Jee and try to imagine what Love they must have had for Guru Sahib. How ready would we be to lay down our heads in order to express our Undying and Unconditional Love for Guru Sahib? When we ‘metha taek’ to Guru Sahib, are we mentally and spiritually as well as physically laying our heads down at the Lotus Charan of Guru Granth Sahib Jee? Do we truly surrender our heads to Guru Sahib when we ‘metha taek’?

Are we really ready to play this Game of Love, which has the cost of surrendering our heads? Is our Love for Guru Sahib True or not? If we were to give our heads to Guru Sahib, what do you think he would do for us? What would he give us in return for our heads?
What would he give us in return for our Love? Simple…. InfiniteBlessings…, which is all a Sikh, asks for?

Today is a day when people all over the world will be thinking of ways of expressing their love for their loved ones. Let this be a day when Sikhs can contemplate on their Love for Guru Sahib.

Remember Shaheeds

Let the memories and pictures of the Shaheeds of our past be shining examples of the Expressions of Love of a Sikh for His Guru! The painting with the Sikhs heads being carried on poles shouldn’t be looked at with saddened faces. Think of the poles with the heads of Sikhs on top as a bunch of colourful flowers being offered to their Husband Lord. Flowers for Guru Jee coloured with the colour of Naam. A sight, which is all too pleasing to Guru Sahib.

A sight which would’ve brought a tear to Guru Sahib for the Undescribable sacrifice these Sikhs made to express their True Love for Guru Sahib. Let the Shaheedee of Baba Deep Singh Jee be recalled upon as the living example of that famous Gurbani tuk by Guru Nanak Dev Jee.

Love Gurbani

Let us Love our Beloved Guru and Lord the same way as these countless, innumerable, and unnamed Sikhs did in the past. Only through Gurbani and the Teachings of Guru Sahib Himself will we learn this ourselves. Only by following Guru Sahib can we learn about and be able to express the Love that is Infinite, Unlimited, Undescribable, Unspeakable, Untold of, and Unconditional.
Let Valentines Day and every other day be days of constant expressions of this Love. Let the world continue to be shocked to see just how much a Sikh Loves His Guru….

US Sikh Body Commends Barack Obama’s Religious Tolerance Remarks

New York (29th Jan) SNS - A US-based Sikh rights group has welcomed President Barack Obama’s recent remarks in which he asked India to promote religious and racial tolerance.

Sikh For Justice (SFJ) commended Obama for his remarks in a town-hall style meeting with students and activists in New Delhi that India will succeed as long as it is “not splintered along the lines of religious faith.”

“We respect the invaluable lesson on religious freedom to India by President Obama and commend him for being the voice of American Sikhs,” SFJ legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said.

An online petition filed by SFJ urging Obama to question Indian government on why the Indian constitution labels Sikhs as Hindus has gained more than 125,000 signatures and is awaiting White House response.

ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਣ ਦੱਸ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ? ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ। ਹੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗੇ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ। ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਸਹਾਰਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥ ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਬਲ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈਂ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੀ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜਿਸ ਕੋਲ ਮੈਂ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਸੁਖ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਹੀ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥ ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਵੇਖ, (ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ) ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੈ, (ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ) ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ, ਲੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਗ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਸ਼ੇਰ ਤੇ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਇਕੋ ਥਾਂ ਰੱਖੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਡਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ? ਅਜੇਹੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਵਾਲੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਡਰ ਭਰਮ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੩॥ ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਵੇਖੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਤਾਕਤ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਦਰ ਦਿਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਰਦਾ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਧਰਤੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਪੈਰਾਂ ਹੇਠੋਂ (ਮੌਤ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਉੱਪਰ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੨॥

में तेरे कौन कौन से गुण बता कर तेरी सिफत -सलाह कर सकता हूँ ? तूँ सारे गुणों का खजाना है, तूँ सुब का मालिक है । हे सुबसे ऊचे भगवान! तूँ सुब का पालन करने वाला है । में तेरी बढाई बियान नहीं कर सकता ॥੧॥ हे हरी! मेरे लिए तेरा वह नाम ही सहारा है। हे मेरे मालिक! जैसे तुझे अच्छा लगे उसी प्रकार मेरी रक्षा कर। तेरे बिना मेरा और कोई सहारा नहीं है॥१॥रहाउ॥ हे मेरे मालिक! तूँ ही मेरे लिए बल है, तूँ ही मेरे लिए सहारा है। मैं तेरे आगे ही बेनती कर सकता हूँ। मेरे लिए कोई ऐसी जगह नहीं, जिस पास मैं बेनती कर सकूँ। मैं अपना हेर एक सुख हरेक दुःख तेरे पास ही पेश कर सकता हूँ॥२॥ हे मेरे मन! देख, (पानी के) बीच ही धरती है, (धरती के) बीच ही पानी है, लकड़ी मैं आग राखी हुई है, (मालिक प्रभु ने, मानो) शेर और बकरी एक जगह रखे हुए हैं। हे मन! (तूँ क्यों डरता है? ऐसी शक्ति वाले) परमात्मा का नाम जप कर तूँ अपने हरेक डर भ्रम दूर कर लिया कर॥३॥ हे संत जनों! देखो परमात्मा की बड़ी ताकत! परमात्मा उनको आदर दिलाता है, जिनकी कोई इज्ज़त नहीं करता था। हे नानक! जैसे धरती (मनुख के) पैरों के निचे से (मौत आने पर) उस के उप्पर आ जाती है, उसी प्रकार परमात्मा सारे जगत को ला कर साध जनों के चरणों में डाल देता है॥४॥१॥१२॥

ਫਿਰਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਭੇਟੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ॥ ਆਨ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਾਂਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਧਾਰੀ ਓਟ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਸਗਲ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਸੁਰਗ ਮਿਰਤ ਪਇਆਲ ਭੂ ਮੰਡਲ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਮਾਇ ॥ ਜੀਅ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਸਭ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੨॥

फिरत फिरत भेटे जन साधू पूरै गुरि समझाइआ ॥ आन सगल बिधि कांमि न आवै हरि हरि नामु धिआइआ ॥१॥ ता ते मोहि धारी ओट गोपाल ॥ सरनि परिओ पूरन परमेसुर बिनसे सगल जंजाल ॥ रहाउ ॥ सुरग मिरत पइआल भू मंडल सगल बिआपे माइ ॥ जीअ उधारन सभ कुल तारन हरि हरि नामु धिआइ ॥२॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਕਿ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਜੁਗਤੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਕ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਭੀ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੧। ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ। (ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ) ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਜੰਜਾਲ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਏ।ਰਹਾਉ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਦੇਵ ਲੋਕ, ਮਾਤ-ਲੋਕ, ਪਾਤਾਲ-ਸਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ, ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਬਚਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ, ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ।੨।

हे भाई! खोजते खोजते जब मैं गुरु महां पुरख को मिला, तो पूरे गुरु ने (मुझे) यह समझ दी की ( माया के मोह से बचने के लिए) और सारी जुग्तियों में से एक भी जुगत कान नहीं आती। परमात्मा का नाम सिमरन करना ही काम आता है।१। इस लिए, हे भाई! मैंने परमात्मा का सहारा ले लिया। (जब मैं) सरब-व्यापक परमात्मा के सरन आया, तो मेरे सारे (माया के) जंजाल नास हो गये।रहाउ। हे भाई! देव लोक, मात लोक, पाताल-सारी ही सृष्टि माया (मोह में) फसी हुई है। हे भाई! सदा परमात्मा का नाम जपा करो, यही है जीवन को ( माया के मोह से बचाने वाला, यही है सारी ही कुलों को पार लगाने वाला।२।

ਹੇ ਸੁਹਾਗਵਤੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ! (ਹੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸਿੱਖੋ!) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਸਨੇਹਾ ਦਿਹੋ, ਦੱਸੋ। ਮੈਂ (ਉਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੀ ਬਾਬਤ) ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ (ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹਾਂ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ। ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲੱਛਣ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ। ਹੇ ਸੁਗਾਗਣੋ! ਤੁਸੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੀ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝਾਓ।੧। ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਹੇ ਲੋਕੋ! ਸੁਣੋ। ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਲੇਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਉਤੇ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ)।੨।੧।੨।

हे सुहागवती सखियो! (हे गुर-सिखों!) मुझे प्यारे प्रभु की मीठी खबर दो । मैं (उस प्यारे के बारे में) कई प्रकार (की बातें) सुन सुन के हैरान हो रही हूँ। १। रहाउ। कोई कहता है, वेह सब से बाहर बस्ता है, कोई कहता है, वेह सब के अन्दर बस्ता है। उस का रंग बही दीखता, उस का कोई लक्षण नजर नहीं आता। हे सुहागनों! तुम मुझे सच्ची बात समझाओ।१। नानक कहता है=हे लोगो! सुनो। वः परमात्मा सब मैं निवास रखने वाला है, हेरेक सरीर में बसने वाला है (फिर बाई, उस को माया का) जरा भी लेप नहीं है। वेह प्रभु संत जानो की जीभ (जिव्हा) पर बस्ता है (संत जन सर समय उसी का नाम जपते हैं।२।१।२।

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿੰਗ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ, ਤੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਮੋਹ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਆਪ ਕੱਢ ਲਿਆ, ਜੋ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਰਗੇ ਜਗਤ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ-) ਜਾਲ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ) ਚੀੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥ (ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਜੇਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਤੇ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਐਬ-ਦੀਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ॥੨॥ (ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਗ਼ਮ ਤੇ ਰੋਗ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਭਾਰੀਆਂ ਮੁਸੀਬਤਾਂ-ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ ॥੩॥ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੜ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਫੜ ਲਏ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਪਿਆ ॥੪॥੨੨॥੨੮॥

प्रभु ने अपने सेवकों के अनेकों विघन दूर कर दिए, और कृपा कर के उस को अपना बना लिया है॥१॥ हे प्रभु! तूं अपने सेवकों को (उस मोह जाल में से) आप निकल लिया, जो स्वपन जैसे जगत (का मोह) जाल (तेरे सेवक के चारो तरफ) बन गया था॥१॥रहाउ॥ (सरन आये मनुख के ) पहाड़ों जितने बड़े और भयानक कर्म-बुराइयाँ दीनो ऊपर दया करने वाले परमात्मा ने एक पल में दूर कर दिए॥२॥ (सेवकों के) अनेकों गम रोग, बड़ी भरी मुसीबतें-परमात्मा का नाम जप कर दूर हो गयी॥३॥ परमात्मा ने मेहर की नज़र कर के उस मनुख को अपने लड़ लगा लिया, हे नानक! जिस ने परमात्मा के चरण पकड़ लिए, जो मनुख प्रभु की सरन आ पड़ा॥४॥२२॥२८॥

ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬੜੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪੁੱਛਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ। ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਅਕਲ ਸਿੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

हे हरी! मेरे मन में बड़ी तीव्र इच्छा है की मैं किसी तरह, तेरा दर्शन कर सकूँ। मैं अपने गुरु के पास जा के गुरु से पूछती हूँ और गुरु से पूछ के अपने मुर्ख मन को शिक्षा देती रहती हूँ। कुराहे पड़ा हुआ मेरा मन गुरु के शब्द में जुड़ कर ही अकल सीखता है और फिर वह सदा परमात्मा का नाम याद करता रहता है। हे नानक! जिस मनुख ऊपर मेरा प्यारा प्रभु कृपा की नज़र करता है, वह प्रभु के चरणों में अपना मन जोड़ी रखता है॥१॥

ਹੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ! ਮਿੱਤਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਸਦਕੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੧। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਿੱਖ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਿਲ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਿਲ।ਰਹਾਉ। ਹੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ (ਗਾਉਣੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਣ (ਗਾਉਣੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਿੱਖੇ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ (ਮਿੱਠਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਮੰਨਿਆ ਹੈ।੨।

हे गुरसिख! मित्र गुरु ने (मुझे) परमात्मा की सिफत सलाह की बातें सुनाई हैं। मैं अपने गुरु से बार बार सदके कुर्बान जाता हूँ।१। हे मेरे गुरु के प्यारे सिख! मुझे आ के मिल, मुझे आ के मिल ।रहाउ। हे गुरसिख! परमात्मा के गुण (गाने) परमात्मा को पसंद आते हैं। मेने वेह गुण गाने, गुरु से सीखे हैं। मैं उन बड़े भाग्य वालो से बार बार कुर्बान जाता हूँ, जिन्होंने गुरु के हुकम को मीठा कर के माना है।२।

Sikh Population Around The World

The first immigrants to North America

The Sikh homeland is the Punjab, in India, where today Sikhs make up approximately 61% of the population. This is the only place where Sikhs are in the majority.

Population of Sikhs in the world is around 27 million. That makes Sikhs 0.39% of the world population. Out of these 27 million approximately 83% live in India with 76% of all Sikhs living in Punjab.This is the only place where Sikhs are in the majority. Other Indian states where Sikhs have substantial population i.e greater than 200,000 are Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttaranchal, Assam and Jammu & Kashmir.

Outside India Sikhs are almost everywhere. Sikhs have emigrated to countries all over the world - especially to English-speaking and East Asian nations. In doing so they have retained, to an unusually high degree, their distinctive cultural and religious identity. The existance of Sikh communities throughout the world presents a fascinating story of an immigrant community which originated in the Punjab, India, more than five hundred years ago. As everyone knows, male Sikhs are easily recognized by their turbans and beards (but all men wearing turbans are not Sikhs). Over the centuries, they have acquired a reputation for being sturdy, hard working and adventrous; they are a people who have earned the reputation for being extremely brave and loyal soldiers.

Sikh migration from India began from the 2nd half of the 19th century when the British had completed their annexation of the Punjab. The British Raj preferentially recruited Sikhs in the Indian Civil Service and, in particular, the British Indian Army. This led to migration of Sikhs to different parts of British India and the British Empire. During this era, semiskilled Sikh artisans were also transported from the Punjab to British East Africa to help in the building of railways. After World War II, Sikhs emigrated from both India and Pakistan. Most went to the United Kingdom but many also went to North America. The main factor for Sikh migration has been economic. Significant Sikh population now resides in United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Malaysia, East Africa, Australia and Thailand.

History of Sikh Immigration in Britain

First Immigrants

Most of Britain's Sikh population immigrated either from the Punjab in the 1950s and 60s, or from East Africa little later. The first recorded Sikh immigrant in Britain was Maharajah Duleep Singh. Duleep Singh was the last ruler of the Sikh kingdom in Punjab. After Punjab was annexed by British Maharajah was dethroned and exiled to Britain in 1849 at the age of 14. But the main immigration of the Sikhs to Britain happened in the 1950s. These were mostly the men from Punjab seeking work to fill the shortage of unskilled labour in Britain. Most worked in industries like foundries and textiles. These new arrivals mostly settled in London, Birmingham and West Yorkshire.

Reason for Immigration

People wanted to leave the Punjab not just because they have oppurtunities abroad, but also because of the chaotic aftermath of the 1947 partition of India into the secular but largely Hindu state of India and the Muslim state of Pakistan. This partition mainly affected the Sikh homeland of the Punjab. There was bloodshed and destruction as millions of Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs tried to cross the border to the safety of their own communities. Punjab changed from a settled and prosperous area to a violent and overcrowded zone. Many Sikhs left from west Punjab in Pakistan to move to east Punjab in India, while others left India altogether. The Punjab was disrupted again in 1966, when India further subdivided it into 3 parts, with the creation of the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.

Immigration from East Africa

The migration from East Africa was the result of the move to Africanise countries like Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, depriving many Asians of their work, and in many cases expelling them altogether. The Sikhs who migrated from East Africa had a different attitude to the outward symbols of Sikhism. They continued to wear them as they were already used to living as an expatriate community in Africa for over 70 years. They were accustomed to being a highly visible minority. And also most of them were highly skilled and employable, in contrast to the mostly labour oriented migration from Punjab. The presence of a group of Sikhs who took pride in being members of the Khalsa encouraged others to return to the five Ks. This strengthened the identity and the visibility of the British Sikhs as a whole.

Sikh Immigration to Canada

First gurdwara in North America

It was in 1902 that the first Sikhs arrived in Canada. They came as part of a Hong Kong military contingent travelling to the coronation of Edward VII. Some of them returned to Canada, settling in British Columbia. A population of more than 5,000 South Asians mostly Sikhs, came to British Columbia in this period. Immigration was then banned in 1908. This resulted in population gradually decreasing to 2,000.

Despite facing discrimination, Sikhs quickly established a strong community in British Columbia. they created the Vancouver Khalsa Diwan Society in 1907. In 1908 Sikhs built their first permanent gurdwara. Later Gurdwaras were built in New Westminster, Victoria, Nanaimo, Golden, Abbotsford, Fraser Mills and Paldi by 1920s.

Sikh communities in Canada usually developed around the gurdwaras. Through the gurdwaras Sikhs provided support and aid to community members in need. Gurdwaras organized the Sikh communities in their fight to have the immigration ban overturned. Which resulted in wives and children of legal Sikh residents to be allowed into Canada in the 1920s.

In 1950s Sikhism in Canada underwent further changes as the immigration resumed. In the 1960s and 1970s tens of thousands of skilled Sikhs settled across Canada, especially in southern Ontario from Toronto to Windsor.With increasing Sikh population, gurdwaras were established in every major city eastward to Montreal.

The number of Sikhs living in Canada in the year 2004 was about 400,000. In 2011, the Canadian Government revealed that they had estimated there to be at least 800,000 Sikhs living in Canada.

Sikh Immigration in US

Sikhs started immigrating to the United States in 1897. Some came straight from India, while others from the far east. By 1910 there were thousands of Sikhs living in California and the other western states. Majority of these were singles as they couldn't bring their families due to strict immigration laws. They were neither allowed to buy property and land. Majority either returned to India or married women of Mexican ancestry to stay. These early settlers mainly worked on agricultural or railroad construction jobs. Some worked in mines and lumber mills as well. They built their first Gurdwara in Stockton, California in 1912. This Gurdwara is still in operation today.

After 1915 due to the strict immigration laws, immigration of the Sikhs almost stopped . Sikh population dwindled. There were only few hundred Sikhs living in California as the second world war ended. Immigration laws were changed in 1965, which resulted in a new wave of Sikh immigration. Most of them were educated and they got jobs in almost every profession. Wherever they settled, they also built Gurdwaras. There are hundreds of Gurdwaras in the United States today. Some of them joined the US Army and proudly served. The Police forces in New York, Los Angeles, and the California National Guard have turbaned Sikh police officers. Since pioneer Sikhs got jobs in agriculture, they settled in California's central valley. Due to that, 10% of Yuba City's population is Sikh.

Immigration to Australia

Early Immigration

Story goes that first Indian settlers to Australia came as part of Captain Cook's ship. These were the times when road transport was not yet developed in Australia.These settlers had come to Australia to run Camel trains. These were then called Afghans and they kept the communication and supply line open between Melbourne and the center of Australia. Earliest Sikh arrivals in Australia included Sardar Beer Singh Johal who came in 1895 and Sardar Narain Singh Heyer, who arrived in 1898. Many Sikhs took part in the rush for gold on the Victorian fields while majority of muslims worked as camel drivers in the Central Australian desert.

Another wave of Sikhs arrived around 50 years ago when India and Australia both were British colonies. These enterprising Sikhs came to work on the Banana Plantations in Southern Queensland. Today a large number of them live in the town of Wolgoolga. These people have their own Banana Farms and are quite rich. Now there are two Gurdwaras in Wolgoolga. The third wave of Indians came about 25 years ago, just after Australia abandoned its Whites Only policy. Recently another big influx began with arrival of IT professionals.

While most Sikh immigration was direct from India but when a military coupe took place in Fiji around a decade ago there was an influx of Fizi Indian Population. Today there is a large Fiji Indian population in Australia who call Australia there home.

Recent immigration

Since 98 A new wave of Indian immigrants has hit Australia. Starved of government funding, Australian education institutes started desperately recruiting full fee paying overseas students. Many of these students have paid large sums of fees and are looking for work to support themselves. There are many thousands of Sikh students studying in Australia at any given time.

Sikhs have a vibrant punjabi music and dance culture, elements of which are infiltrating contemporary western music. The pulsating Bhangra music, once restricted to celebrate the harvest throughout Northern India, is now making its presence felt in dance clubs around the world. Bhangra music
frequently tops the charts in the United Kingdom, Canada and the South East Asia.

East London’s First Sikh Faith School Puts Plans on Hold

REDBRIDGE, UK (February 7, 2015)—Atam Academy, a free school, had been due to open in September, but a lack of possible sites in Redbridge has forced governors to postpone the opening.

The school had been hoping to announce the site last month, but parents were instead told of the postponement.

They will have the chance to reapply for 2016 under a new admissions process closer to the time.

Speaking to the Recorder, chairman of the governors Mankamal Singh said: “We are still actively looking for a site with the help of the Department for Education.

“We are very grateful for parents’ overwhelming support.

“But we had signatures for 180 children – and we were oversubscribed in reception year – so we had to tell the parents immediately so they could make future plans.”

Mr Singh insisted the school with the help of DfE and the Education Funding Agency is “working diligently” to find a suitable permanent site.

“We want to find the right site,” he added. “The site we need is a large one – we need space for 1300 pupils and 100 staff.

“We need to find the right site because we do not want to outgrow the site after a few years.”

The DfE approved the school’s application in October last year.

The school will be the third Sikh-designated free school in the capital and the first in east London.

Mr Singh said the DfE would enter negotiations with private land owners once a site had been found.

Meanwhile, the governors have been able to announce the school’s first principal – Raminder Singh Vig.

The teacher has experience working in schools in Belgium and Dubai.

“He has an exceptional background in education with experience in start-up schools and driving them to outstanding,” Mr Singh said.
